Modern Furniture

My early works also included experiments in modern furniture. I was taken by the “High Tech” style movement as well as the
“Memphis” post-modern furniture and furnishings collection, created by a group of world-famous architects and designers. But
there was a BUT... I came from the world of performance: racing vehicles and advanced products. I couldn’t understand why so
much of these highly acclaimed furniture pieces were so un-user-friendly – functionless. They were meant to be seen but not used,
                                      or so it seemed.

I wanted to do something different. I wanted to create truly usable pieces that were beautiful AND useful. Even my BMW writing
desk (made from the trunk-lid of a current BMW automobile) was totally functional and quite comfortable as a work spot. It
even had a real Blaupunkt stereo radio and cassette player hidden underneath for total enjoyment while working. As for the hard
surfaces of my furniture pieces, the carefully designed shapes fit the body in a way that made them truly comfortable, and the wild
lighting fixtures had flexible arms that allowed the user to aim the lighting where it was needed. – DW
