And Cars...
My love of cars started when I was very young. My mom would get French lifestyle magazines (she grew up there) and she showed
me some photos from the 24 hours of Le Mans. I can still see the page: three amazing endurance racers from Ferrari, Porsche and
Chaparral, their profiles stacked, one above the other. The shapes were captivating. I was instantly hooked and from there, I did
everything I could to connect with these amazing machines. I looked for magazines, I got into slot-cars, I built models, I collected
Corgi toys and Matchbox cars. I drew cars, I dreamt cars, I lived to be part of that world. I convinced my grandmother to sew me
a driver suit in the period-correct light blue with a Ferrari patch on the chest. I even sawed the face-guard off my Pee-Wee football
helmet so I could turn it into a proper racing helmet, with taped stripes to mimic my heroes of the day. In high school, I worked
and worked, saving every dollar possible to realize my long-time dream of owning a Porsche. My Dad, along with anyone else who
would listen, told me I was crazy. That just made me work harder to prove them all wrong. I washed dishes, cleaned houses, sold
my photography; I did anything I had to in order to save up enough to buy a $1,600 run down 1966 Porsche 912. I learned how
to rebuild the engine, fix and paint the body, re-upholster the interior, and make myself one hell of a cool high school car. And that
was just the beginning. – DW
