As If They Came From The Factory
As the custom car projects got more and more involved, one of my underlying goals that drove design and execution decisions was
that I wanted the finished product to look as if it had been built by the factory. I had seen plenty of poorly crafted "project" cars
that looked like they'd been made in someone's home garage and that was never going to do. With that in mind, the two most
elaborate vehicles we built, a convertible Porsche 911 with a completely revised aerodynamic Turbo body and a Targa-top BMW
pick-up truck, were painstakingly designed, engineered and realized over many months. The endless work that went into these
two show cars was well worth it in the end as people on the street would constantly exclaim: "Wow, I didn't know BMW made
pick-ups!" and "I didn't know Porsche was making convertible 911s!" Never did anyone ask if these were home-built – they just
assumed they were direct from their respective factories, and that was the greatest achievement and compliment of all. – DW
