Pheasant Hill
After creating my first fashion lines for CB Sports, I created a line of field shooting clothing that I presented to CB to try to get
them to expand their market beyond skiing and grow their business. CB liked it, but eventually passed as budgets demanded. That
was lucky for me. A few weeks later, I was introduced to one of the largest textile and fashion companies in Turkey and flew to
Istanbul for a one-hour meeting with their president, Cem Boyner. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and the visionary leader of
his company. Cem appreciated my own expertise in hunting and fishing and the idea that I wanted Pheasant Hill to be beautiful
clothing that was designed for real use and not just for posing in fashion magazines. The 80’s fashion world had pounded out the
idea of “authenticity” by the likes of Polo, and others trying to cash in on the English sporting lifestyle. Their ads featured models
holding fishing rods the wrong way and other faux pas. Why wear shooting clothes that would survive 5th Avenue but not a driven
grouse hunt.
Beymen’s elegant stores presented Pheasant Hill with realism and style – they liked the designs so much they asked me to design
the store interiors and source all the displays and decorations, which in this case included boxes of replica hunting guns, which I
had to fly with and get through customs in Turkey. That was fun... – DW
