Manufacturing A Product For Ferrari
It sounds glamorous... and it is. But it’s incredibly difficult to get to work with Ferrari, and even harder to satisfy their standards
of performance and quality. They even hammered me about the brochures we were creating. The bar was constantly being raised.
For us, and for them. Everything had to be exact and perfect. They are, after all, Ferrari.
We set up two HAAS machining centers, wire-feed aluminum welding systems, 8,000 pounds of sanding and buffing discs and
got the best painter in Utah to prepare and spray each Art.Engine in official Ferrari factory paints. It was a thrill every single day!
The Art.Engine weighed 100 pounds which made it a serious piece to move about. 100 pounds and a stellar paint job combine
to challenge you every time you have to shift, move or transport one of these things. We even had custom wooden crates made so
that each Art.Engine would arrive safe and sound, whether it was going to California, Italy or India.
One of the most exciting moments for me was presenting an Art.Engine to Jean Todt at his home in France, and then flying with
him on the Ferrari jet back to Maranello for meetings. He was a most gracious and thankful host and I felt like I was living out my
ongoing Ferrari dream. – DW
